Chloe had been in a remarkably good mood that morning when she had arrived at fifty one. She had just had a very good weekend; met a really nice guy, and to top it all off she had found herself an apartment which meant the nights sleeping in the hotel bed would soon be coming to an end. She was happily greeting her coworkers and humming quietly to herself when she was called to the office and given the ‘good’ news; that she was going to have some kind of reporter or journalist, whatever she wanted to call herself, following her around for the shift. She was explaining the situation to her very amused coworkers while waiting on her ride along partner to show up. “Gahhh I know….I know I’m the new girl but that’s the point…I haven’t been here long enough to make someone mad at me….so how do I?…why me? It really makes no sense…What have I done that was so wrong that I deserve this?” She was asking Otis at the kitchen table as she was munching on an apple. “Besides…my previous point non withstanding I AM the new girl, what am I supposed to show her that a more seasoned paramedic or firefighter for CFD couldn’t show her even better?” Meanwhile Cruz was too busy laughing at her to answer the question which was causing Otis to snicker as he said “Well we, Cruz and I….heck who are we kidding we’re just glad it’s not us.” Nobody else was any more sympathetic as they all were getting a good laugh at Chloe’s expense this morning, which was only making Chloe’s newly formed bad mood worse. Looking at her watch Chloe huffs and points out, “Apparently she can’t tell time either. She was supposed to be here ten minutes ago, I wish… we’d just get a call so I could leave her behind with all of you lovely people.”

“Apparently she can’t tell time either. She was supposed to be here ten minutes ago, I wish… we’d just get a call so I could leave her behind with all of you lovely people.”"Well I was told I would be meeting you by your ambulance so I could get a picture of you before we go." Came Jasmine's neutral voice from behind Chloe. Oh yes, she had heard some of the conversation, but just how much she was not going to let on. "Guess I was the only one who got that memo though." She said with a light simile, not wanting to show she found the comments hurtful, and resisting the urge to try and make any of them squirm over what she may or may not have heard, " You must be Chloe Nunn?" "Jasmine Fay." She said, offering her had for Chloe to shake. "It's nice to meet you." She added after a giving Chloe a moment. Ok that was rubbing Chloe's nose in it just a little bit, seeing as she clearly did not feel the same way about the situation, but Jasmine camouflaged it with a cleverly amiable smile that no one would be able to call her on it. Jasmine looked around at the other people in the room, "I take it you are all Chloe's colleagues?" She smiled, hoping to get some introductions going and start things moving, and maybe break the ice a little. Tag: @hcassell9978 .

Chloe heard a soft voice coming from behind her, "Well I was told I would be meeting you by your ambulance so I could get a picture of you before we go." Her eyes snapped up from the table glaring at Otis and Cruz; who had the audacity to look amused, she whispered sarcastically “Thanks for the heads up guys…don’t know what I’d do without you.” Turning to face the journalist, surprised to find someone close to her own age, Chloe takes the hand she is offering. “Yes, uh…. that would be me, and I wasn’t advised that I’d be having my picture taken …can I fix my make up first?” She tries to joke. Hearing that the girl’s name was Jasmine and that she thought it was nice to meet her, was enough to make Chloe genuinely feel bad.
“Look…I’m really sorry Jasmine, I apologize for my attitude…this really isn’t like me and I truly feel bad about it. Can we just start this over? My name’s Chloe Nunn and I’m fairly new here at fifty one, but It is nice to meet you too. I’ll do whatever I can to get you the information you need today as long as you try not to get in my way during calls, and if I tell you that you need to get up front you agree to do so without argument.” Chloe adds trying to smile best she can.
When Jasmine asks about her colleagues, every last one of them miraculously finds something that they just absolutely have to do right then and vacate the kitchen in one large group headed their separate directions. Chloe can still hear Otis and Cruz laughing at her on the way out the door.
“So, I guess for right now… it’s gonna be just us. I really need to go check my ambo and make sure everything is set up the way I want it, normally I get here extra early to do it…but I was up late last night and that didn’t happen this morning. If you don’t mind you can ask me any question you have while I’m checking everything off and setting everything up.”

“Yes, uh…. that would be me, and I wasn’t advised that I’d be having my picture taken …can I fix my make up first?”Jasmine smiled at Chloe's light attempt at humor, "Sure, whatever makes you comfortable. And don't worry I'll make sure I get your good side." She said with a sisterly wink. Being a fashion savvy woman in her 20's Jasmine understood full well that a girl always wants to look her best in any photo. Especially if there was a chance that the photo was going to be published! “Look…I’m really sorry Jasmine, I apologize for my attitude…this really isn’t like me and I truly feel bad about it. Can we just start this over? My name’s Chloe Nunn and I’m fairly new here at fifty one, but It is nice to meet you too. I’ll do whatever I can to get you the information you need today as long as you try not to get in my way during calls, and if I tell you that you need to get up front you agree to do so without argument.” A genuine smile formed on Jasmine's lips when Chloe began offering a genuine apology. The offer to start over and offer her co-operation caused a sense of happiness to sweep through Jasmine, she was just trying to do her job and it was nice to know that Chloe was going to be on board. "I think starting over would be amazing." She said with a killer smile. "I really do appreciate you letting me shadow you. I'm just trying to do a job and I appreciate your co-operation. I just want to see what it is really like 'a day in the life of'. I understand that this is your show and I'm your guest, the last thing I want to do is get in your way." Jasmine was pleased that Chloe was on board with getting her the info that she wanted for her piece. Not everyone was so willing to talk to a reporter. In her experience people were not always so willing to oblige, as evidenced by Chloe's co-workers simultaneously finding excuses to leave the room. “So, I guess for right now… it’s gonna be just us. I really need to go check my ambo and make sure everything is set up the way I want it, normally I get here extra early to do it…but I was up late last night and that didn’t happen this morning. If you don’t mind you can ask me any question you have while I’m checking everything off and setting everything up.” "Great, that's perfect. You just do whatever you normally do. Don't do anything different because I'm here, I wanna see what it's like 'a day in the life of', ok sweetie?." She said with a bright, reassuring smile. Jasmine followed Chloe out of the kitchen, "If you don't mind me asking why was you up late last night? Were you working or was because of personal reasons?" She asked, posing the question as unobtrusively as she could. "Can you talk me through what you're doing?" She asked as Chloe started checking the ambulance. Tag: @hcassell9978.

"If you don't mind me asking why was you up late last night? Were you working or was because of personal reasons?"
Chloe laughs at Jasmine’s question, “I was up late for lots of reasons, all of which are personal. Some more personal than others; the least personal of which and the only one that I think I’ll share right now being that I did a little studying before I went to sleep I have a big test coming up next week…so moving on…”
Chloe walks out to the ambulance and opens the back doors, seeing that the previous shift had left it somewhat of a mess. “Great! Now you get to watch me clean up after my coworkers! I’m a tad bit OCD when it comes to the back of my ambulance, so finding a truck like this might not bother some medics…but there is no way I’m going to pick up anyone in this.” She says as she pulls the stretcher out of the ambo so she can sweep and mop the floor and change the linens on the stretcher.
“Once everything is clean, I just like to go through and make sure that we have enough of everything we’re supposed to have and that it’s where it’s supposed to be. The last thing I want is to have a patient back here needing something and have to spend time looking for it. I like to have my jump bag on the seat over here where I can reach it…but most of this is personal preference, every medic is going to set it up differently. Technically all of this falls under the driver or other medic’s duties since I have to get report from the shift leaving and have other morning responsibilities…but I’m going to be the one back here nine times out of ten, and I just prefer to make sure it’s done the way I want it and the best way for me to do that is to do it myself. So I usually come in to shift almost an hour early to take care of everything…if I didn’t I wouldn’t be able to keep a partner. They’d all run away screaming.”
Satisfied that the ambulance is the way she wants it. Chloe closes the doors and heads back to the kitchen stopping just outside the door. “Wanna bet how long it takes them all to clear out of here this time when I come back in and sit down?” She laughs before continuing into the room. “I really need some coffee…feel free to help yourself Jasmine what’s ours is yours for the next however long you’re hanging out with us.”

Jasmin said respecting Chloe's privacy. She knew better than to push it at this point in time. She didn't want to put Chloe off after she had agreed to be as helpful as she could be. “Great! Now you get to watch me clean up after my coworkers! I’m a tad bit OCD when it comes to the back of my ambulance, so finding a truck like this might not bother some medics…but there is no way I’m going to pick up anyone in this.” Jasmine smiled at Chloe and quickly jotted something down in her tiny pocket size notepad. That was 'going the extra mile' stuff and was a good angle for her piece. “Once everything is clean, I just like to go through and make sure that we have enough of everything we’re supposed to have and that it’s where it’s supposed to be. The last thing I want is to have a patient back here needing something and have to spend time looking for it. They’d all run away screaming.”Jasmine nodded as she listened, it made sense to have everything in order, and have everything your way for your shift. She chuckled at Chloe's comment about not keeping a partner and jotted another short note. She liked Chloe already. She was obviously dedicated to her work and seemed nice too, with a sense of humor to go with it. “Wanna bet how long it takes them all to clear out of here this time when I come back in and sit down?”Jasmine grinned an let out a light chuckle before she followed Chloe into the kitchen. “I really need some coffee…feel free to help yourself Jasmine what’s ours is yours for the next however long you’re hanging out with us.”"Thank you, that's really nice of you guys." She replied. She made herself a cup of tea and sat down opposite Chloe, "Do you mind if we get started while where sitting here?" She asked, taking out her digital voice recorder, but she did not turn it on and rest it on the table until Chloe had agreed. "So Chloe, why did you decide to get into this line of work?" She asked, beginning the interview. Tag: @hcassell9978.

Chloe eyes the recording device warily before asking, "So is this going to be one of those anything you say can and will be used against you type interviews?" She laughs. "Sure, I don't mind answering a few questions while we sit here and I enjoy my coffee. Besides we better do it while we have time."
Chloe notices that Otis and Cruz haven't run off this time, if anything they are actually sitting closer and trying very unsuccessfully to look like they aren't interested in and listening to the conversation. Their curiosity about the visitor slowly starting to outweigh their aversion to journalists. Chloe doesn't know either of the two very well at this point, but she suspects that Otis has a crush on her. She does however know that both of them are single, and that they have apparently noticed how pretty Jasmine is.
Her attention is drawn out of her thoughts when Jasmine asks her first question. "So Chloe, why did you decide to get into this line of work?"
Chloe takes her time to carefully consider the question before attempting to answer it. She looks up to see not only Jasmine awaiting her answer, but Cruz and Otis have completely given up any pretense of conversation and are looking directly at her eagerly awaiting her answer as well. She looks at both of them rolling her eyes and laughing before starting.
"The short answer is, I like helping people and I get to do that everyday on this job. The long answer...The job really chose me, this type of job is what I've been around my whole life. My Daddy is still with the police department back home and my Mom is an emergency room nurse. I chose to follow in my Mom's footsteps and become an RN, while I was in school I took my paramedic at the same time. Right now I'm working to support myself while I continue in school. I'm hoping eventually to be a Doctor in a pediatric emergency medicine. Back to the question though, the best part of any of these jobs," she says gesturing around, "Is that you get to make a REAL difference for people and their families in what is probably one of the worst times of their life. There is never a question of whether what you're doing is worthwhile or meaningful, because you get to see the differences you make in someone's life up close and personal on a daily basis."

"So is this going to be one of those anything you say can and will be used against you type interviews?"Jasmine grinned a sparkling white smile. Yes Chloe had a sense of humor for sure, which was a good thing considering she was going to be around her for a while. "You're funny." She said looking to Chloe, "But seriously, I want you to relax and be yourself. I'm not here to try and make anyone look bad." She assured her in a friendly manner. "My piece is about helping people understand what it's really like working as a first responder. The difference you guy's make, all the hard work and sacrifices of the job as well as honestly reporting on the state of system, what works and what needs changing." She said being completely honest and up front. "You'll get a copy of what I write before it goes to press. I'm not going to print anything specifically about you unless you are comfortable with what I've written. And I won't use your real name without your permission, so you can speak freely without worrying about what you say or what you don't say coming back to you. I'm only interested in the truth of what things are really like in this world, so if you have an opinion on something important share it." She said, setting up a relaxed atmosphere for Chloe to be able to talk honestly. Jasmine smiled, listening without interrupting while Chloe answered her question. It did not escape her attention either that Chloe's co-workers had stopped to listen too, but much like hunting dear she just kept her focus on Chloe allowing everyone to inch closer and 'come to her' as it were. They might even chime in that way and say a word or two. Jasmine nodded as she listened. Chloe's reasons were good ones, and ones that most people would expect, or at least hope to hear. The fact that her father was a cop, her mother who was a nurse and that she wanted to become a doctor just added even more depth to it. It was all good stuff. "Wow, a doctor, huh?" She said casually, maintaining a friendly smile. "That's really nice. Must be hard work juggling work and your education though." She commented genuinely. Keeping the conversation relaxed like they were just two friends chatting. Tag: @hcassell9978.

“Yeah, admittedly balancing work and school can be difficult…add in a personal life and it becomes almost impossible. My secret…I drink lots of coffee and energy drinks.” She laughs. “I also have a job that allows me to study between calls, and a schedule that is pretty easy to work around…so I can’t complain too much. Besides I genuinely enjoy what I do so that always makes things easier.”
*AMBULANCE 74: Man down unknown causes corner of Delaware and South 24th Ave.*
Chloe jumps up quickly, “Oooh Sorry boys….that’s us!” she says to Cruz and Otis who are still overly interested in the conversation. “Let’s go Jasmine!” she calls over her shoulder as she’s already halfway out the door. “You can hop on in the back…and please wait until I tell you it’s ok before you get out.”
Chloe hates calls like this, seriously there has to be some kind of information as to what happened. She never knows quite how to prepare, because it could literally be anything waiting for them at the given address. At least she can take some comfort in knowing that everything is where it’s supposed to be in the back of the ambulance, and that it’s ready for anything that might be thrown at them.
As they pull up, Chloe recognizes one of their regular customers and calls out to Jasmine “It’s ok to get out, it’s just James…he’s probably just drunk and hungry like he usually is, but we’ll check him out pretty good and take him to Med anyway. He likes to go to Med…he gets a warm bed to sleep it off in and some food to fill him up.” She says smiling. Hopping out of the truck taking the jump bag with her she approaches the older man, “Hey James…what’s up today? What are you doing out here today, Man, it’s way too cold to be outside in this thin jacket.” She says gently.
“Chloe…is that you? I’ve missed you Chloe, all those other guys…they’re just not as nice to me as you are.” He slurs. “Yes James, it’s me…Let’s get you in the back of the ambulance where it’s warm and I can check you out before we head on over to Med.”

Again Jasmine smiled as she listened to Chloe. She could tell by the way that Chloe talked that she genuinely did love the job and was not just saying it. *AMBULANCE 74: Man down unknown causes corner of Delaware and South 24th Ave.*Jasmine jumped up and followed out behind the others. “You can hop on in the back…and please wait until I tell you it’s ok before you get out.”"Sure, okay." She agreed. Letting Chloe know she understood before she quickly climbed into the back and secured herself in. She wasn't going to hold anyone up. It would have been nice to have had an idea of what they were heading to, but at least they were heading somewhere even if it was a mystery draw. It didn't take long for her to feel the ambulance come to a stop and the back doors to open again. “It’s ok to get out, it’s just James…he’s probably just drunk and hungry like he usually is, but we’ll check him out pretty good and take him to Med anyway. He likes to go to Med…he gets a warm bed to sleep it off in and some food to fill him up.”Jasmine unfastened her belt and jumped out of the ambo. She watched as Chloe set to work, staying close enough to see everything but far away enough to keep out of the way. It wasn't a drastic call, thankfully no one was hurt or trapped under a car or something. But there were certainly a few social aspects to it that Jasmine knew she would include in her piece, though she planed to do it tastefully. Calls like this counted for such a high percentage of the responses ambulance crews had to make, people like James looking for a hot meal and a warm bed. Someone needed to help them of course, that was not even a question. But the question was who should help them? Was it right that ambulance crews should be the ones do so when they could be using their skills and resources responding to actual medical emergencies? Whatever the social debates of it were, the fact was that right now it was up to the ambulance crews to respond and Chloe was doing her job well. Jasmine smiled at the care and compassion she saw the young medic was showing. She watched as James was aided into the ambo, and waited to be told where to sit, up front in the cab or in the back with the patient. Riding in the back was not a problem, as long as someone was going to be with them! Tag: @hcassell9978.

Chloe hopped in behind James, and while she was fastening his seat belts for him she asked, "James, I have a friend riding with me today. Her name is Jasmine...do you mind if she rides back here in the back with us this time?"
She waits for James to answer before gesturing Jasmine to go ahead and hop in. "Now why would I mind riding with two pretty ladies?" He slurs a little.
"James? Have you been taking your medicine? I bet your sugar is pretty high today, you know I can always tell...can't fool me." Chloe asks noting that he was slurring his words a little more than usual and he had a distinct odor to him that she could always pick up on. "Is it ok if I poke your finger and check your sugar sweetheart?"
"Of course Chloe you do whatever you need to do...you always take such good care of me." He says as he pats her hand.
Getting out the glucometer she pokes James' finger and checks his blood glucose level getting a reading of 470. "James? How long have you been out of your insulin? I told you to call that number I gave you when you were close to running out. Did you call the number I gave you?"
"I tried Chloe I swear I did, but I called once and they were mean...they asked so many questions...and then I lost the number, I'm not sure how many days I've been out. I'm so sorry Chloe." James says sadly "I didn't mean to."
"I know James, I know." She says gently trying to reassure the man, "I need to start an IV on you buddy and get some fluids going, we need to flush some of this sugar out of you...you're just way too sweet today." Chloe says as she starts setting up to start an IV and hooking up fluids to the line. "You know the deal...it's going to be a big poke and then I'm going to go ahead and draw some blood for the hospital ok? That way they don't have to poke you again until they recheck your sugar." Chloe likes to keep him informed as to what's going on so as not to scare the older man. She inserts the IV and hooks him up to fluids, before calling in to the ER to let them know they were headed their way.
"Once we get to the hospital I'm going to give you that phone number again, ok? I'll call them this time and try to get everything set up for you where you only have to call and tell them that you're almost out." Chloe knows better than to get too involved in caring for her patients, but James really was a sweet old man and if she could help by making a phone call to the medication assistance program she didn't see why she shouldn't.
"Thank you Chloe, you're so nice...those other guys, they're just mean...they yell at me... and act like I'm bothering them."
"They're not mean James, they don't mean to be anyway, they're just trying to do their job...sometimes it's not very easy to be nice doing what we do. But I promise I will try and help you get everything set up so that you can get your insulin. You have that and you won't need to call us quite as often." She says patting his hand and smiling as they pull up to the hospital.

"Now why would I mind riding with two pretty ladies?" Jasmin smiled at his words as she climbed into the ambulance upon Chloe beckoning her. "Hey James." She greeted with a smile as she strapped herself in. At first impressions Jasmine thought the man was just simply drunk, with his slurred speech and odd smell. It was when Chloe started talking about insulin and sugar levels Jasmine realized she had been too quick to jump to conclusions and stereotypes. But then she was young and still had a few things to learn in life. She watched as Chloe talked to James and took care of him, reassuring him comfortingly and promising to help him sort out his medication. It was both a sweet and a sad scene to witness for several reasons. Jasmine had a diabetic aunt so that meant she had some knowledge on the matter, but it was the type where her sugar levels could get too low and Jasmine did not know much about the insulin side of things. "So what would happen if James stayed off the insulin?" She asked inquisitively. Obviously running out of medication was never a good thing, and it had obviously caused some problems or James would not need an IV line or a trip to the hospital right now, but Jasmine wanted to know just how serious or not it was that James take insulin regularly. "What will happen to him now?" she asked once they reached the hospital. Jasmine watched Chloe and the rest of the medical staff as they did their jobs and she wondered if they would be sticking with James or if they would have to hand him over and then move on to the next call. Truthfully Chloe had all but forgotten that Jasmine was in the back of the truck when she asked her what would happen if James stayed off of his insulin, Chloe explained "In a person without diabetes insulin is secreted from the pancreas and helps the body rid itself of the extra sugar, but James' pancreas either isn't secreting anymore insulin at all or not enough...so he needs to have the medication to get the sugar out of his body...without it he gets way too sweet, Right James?" She asks patting the man on the shoulder when he agreed with her. Looking back to Jasmine she continues her explanation, "If too much sugar builds up in the body...it causes the body to become acidotic and leads to DKA or diabetic ketoacidosis...which causes lots of symptoms most of which James has right now, if left untreated for too long it can lead to death. Which is why James and I are going to get his medication sorted out, Right James?"
Arriving at Chicago Med, Chloe walked in beside the stretcher so that James could see her the whole time. When the doctor walked up Chloe gave them the run down of the situation along with everything she had done for James up to that point. They rolled him in to a room and moved him over to the hospital bed. "Hey James," Chloe says taking the mans hand and patting it, "I'm going to go make that phone call for you right now ok...I'll be back to see you before I leave. They'll take good care of you here."
"Chloe, do you have to leave? They're not always nice to me here like you are." James asks. Chloe nods at him, "James you know I have to leave now, but I promise I'm not going to leave before I make that phone call to the medication assistance program ok?"
She steps into the hallway and grabs a flyer off the counter entering the numbers and pressing send on her phone she's connected to an operator and gives them all of James' information to get it set up for him explaining to the lady on the other end of the phone the situation she gets her to agree to let her hand her phone over to James so all he has to do is confirm the information she's given her. Holding the phone away from her face she speaks to James and explains that all he has to do is answer some questions and everything will be set up. She smiles when she sees the relief on his face and hands him her phone. When he's finished with her phone he hands it back and thanks her repeatedly for helping him out. "You're welcome James...you know I'd help you out anyway I can." She smiles at him before telling him that it's time for her to go. "Take care of yourself James."
Walking out of the room she shakes her head trying to get in the right head space to deal with Jasmine and any other call they might have. "I'm ready when you are she calls to her partner and heads back out to the Ambo." She leans up against the side of the ambulance and looks at Jasmine. "What will happen to him now?" She repeats Jasmine's question, "I really don't know for sure, but it's up to the doctors and nurses to decide what would be best for him at this point. I do know that he has a shipment of insulin on it's way and it should be delivered by tomorrow or the next day. I probably did too much, but I try to do what I can, you know? Any other questions about this one, or are you ready to head back to the station?"

Jasmine listened as Chloe talked about diabetes and explained about the importance of insulin, her eyebrow raised in surprise a little as she heard some of the information, “Wow, I didn't know diabetes could be so serious.” She looked to James, giving him a smile, “Good job you've got Chloe here to take such good care of you.”Jasmine watched as Chloe handed James over to the doctors before going about getting his medication set up. Once that had all been taken care of Jasmine followed Chloe back out to the ambulance. "What will happen to him now?" "I really don't know for sure, but it's up to the doctors and nurses to decide what would be best for him at this point. I do know that he has a shipment of insulin on it's way and it should be delivered by tomorrow or the next day. I probably did too much, but I try to do what I can, you know? Any other questions about this one, or are you ready to head back to the station?" “No, I'm good. After you.” She replied, motioning to the ambulance with a smile. “I can't help but think how easily the need for that call out could have been prevented had James just gotten his medication to begin with.” Jasmine began as they headed back. “Is there not like a walk in centre or something like that he could have gone to to ask for some help getting his medication organized?” She asked inquisitively.
